Attorney General and AARP ElderWatch warn consumers of reported door-to-door n ew spaper subscription scam

DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers and AARP ElderWatch issued a consumer advisory today warning Coloradans of a reported scam involving door-to-door salesmen selling subscriptions to the “n ew ” Rocky Mountain N ew s.

According to AARP ElderWatch, one of the Office of the Attorney General’s partners in fraud prevention, the door-to-door salesmen have told Colorado Springs residents they only can accept cash in exchange for a subscription.

“Scam artists are very adept at exploiting the news of the day, and this is just another example of these individuals trying profit off the name of one of Colorado ’s former n ew spaper giants,” Suthers said. “Coloradans should be wary of anyone selling subscriptions or other products door to door.”

If you suspect you or a family member might have been victimized, you should contact your local police or sheriff’s department. You also can report fraud to the Colorado Consumer Line, 1-800-222-4444.
