Letter to the Editor - Backward Thinking in Rural Colorado

By Marsha Looper

This year’s election is one for the books! First, Governor Ritter the entrenched incumbent decided not to run for re-election and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper leaped in to fill the Democratic candidate void. Next, the GOP candidate is in a meltdown. And now, the American Constitutionalist Party candidate is in a statistical dead heat with the Hickenlooper.

Hickenlooper has dropped another doozie of a declaration against rural families in Colorado. As reported on October 22, 2010 by Michael Sandoval of the National Review Online, Hickenlooper during a 2009 interview made a comment insinuating people living outside of the Denver Metro area are backwards thinking. Here is the Mayor’s comment:

“I think a couple things, I mean, you know, the tragic death of Matthew Shepard occurred in Wyoming. Colorado and Wyoming are very similar. We have some of the same, you know, backwards thinking in the kind of rural Western areas you see in, you know, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico.”

Hickenlooper and his “GIDDY UP’N VOTE BUS TOUR” have swerved into a ditch and over the next couple of days they’ll be trying to steer the bus back on the road to win over the voters in rural Colorado.

The Democrat apparently doesn’t value the fact that hard working men and women in rural Colorado have been growing the crops and raising the cattle that feed the families in this state, this country and the world for generations. Not only do these same farmers and ranchers provide a bounty of food for our nation, they are now providing fuel for our cars and trucks.

Hickenlooper doesn’t seem to value the contributions our agriculture communities in rural Colorado make to our economy and our nation’s security. Does the Mayor even care? Colorado’s 37,000 farms and ranches contribute more than $20 billion annually to Colorado’s economy and provide more than 100,000 jobs in rural Colorado. Colorado agricultural producers rank 2nd in the nation for market sheep & lambs; 4th for cattle on feed; 6tth for winter wheat and 8th for overall hay production! These national rankings reflect the ingenuity, hard work and intelligence of the citizens in our rural communities – not a “backwards thinking” mentality that Hickenlooper claims in his interview.

It’s time for Denver Mayor Hickenlooper to apologize to the people of rural Colorado and appreciate their contributions to Colorado’s quality of life, economy and national security. The millions of people living outside of Denver deserve better representation and leadership than the Democrat candidate who thinks he can insult rural Coloradans and still earn their support in his drive to become governor.

First Annual Medicine of Cycling Conference, Colorado Springs, Nov 13th and 14th

Press Release

USA Cycling is pleased to announce the first annual Medicine of Cycling Conference scheduled for November 13-14, 2010 at USA Cycling’s headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. The conference, set to run parallel to USA Cycling’s Annual Promoters Summit, is a unique two-day summit offering medical professionals a platform on which to collaborate and establish common standards of care for competitive cyclists. It is accredited by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at the University of California, San Francisco and will offer 11.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credits to attending physicians.

“We’re excited to be able to help move standards of care for our athletes forward,” said USA Cycling Chief Executive Officer Steve Johnson. “We hope the conference will serve as a collaboration point for all medical personnel in the sport to discuss and continually improve practices in treatment and injury prevention amongst cyclists.”

Organized by USA Cycling Board of Directors Vice Chairman Mark Abramson, University of California-San Francisco physician Dr. Anna Abramson, and Harvard-Brigham and Women's Hospital trauma surgeon Dr. James Watkins, the conference aims to give the sport’s medical professionals the opportunity to learn, teach and collaborate with each other.

“One of the most difficult aspects of providing care for this diverse and mobile group of athletes is their variety of medical needs, locations, insurances and circumstances,” said Dr. Abramson. “We recognized the need for collaboration after listening to medical support staff and physicians express a need to form standards of care for cycling patients. The teams and athletes also expressed the desire for reassurance that their physicians understand the needs of professional cyclists and have the credentials to treat them properly.”

Conference participants will hear from several noteworthy speakers during the following sessions:

• Cyclist Health and Injury – MARK GREVE, M.D. (Clinical Assistant Professor, Brown University; Clinical Associate Professor, Tufts University; Medical Director, Team Type 1)

• Spine Injuries and Back Pain in Cyclists – SONNY GILL, M.D. (Orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo.)

• Traumatic Brain Injury in Athletes – DON GERBER, Psy.D. (Specializes in rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord and brain injuries at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo.)

• Hot Topics in the Law of Sports Medicine – STEPHEN HESS, ESQ. (Sherman and Howard, LLC, USA Cycling General Counsel)

• Anti-Doping and the Biological Passport – Representatives from U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA)

• Wounds and Wound Care for Cyclists – JAMES WATKINS, M.D. (Trauma surgeon specializing in burns and wound management at Harvard-Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass.)

• Primary Care and Infectious Disease Management – JASON BRAYLEY, M.D. (Sports medicine physician and team physician for Kenda presented by Gear Grinder)

1A Public Forum, Colorado Springs, CO , Wed, Oct 27

Press Release

THE CAMPAIGN WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND EXPLAIN WHY VOTING “NO” ON COUNTY QUESTION 1A KEEPS OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE

Colorado Springs, CO – On Wednesday, October 27th from noon to 1:00, the “No on 1A” campaign will host a public forum downtown in the Carnegie Room at the Penrose Library. The “No on 1A” campaign has been launched by Citizens for Safer Communities, a grassroots issue committee formed to defeat the ban on Medical Marijuana Centers. The committee includes business owners, doctors, attorneys, engineers, construction workers, and other community leaders. The general public is invited to come out and learn more regarding 1A and get their questions answered.
County Question 1A allows registered voters in El Paso County to decide whether to ban Medical Marijuana Centers in the unincorporated portions of El Paso County. If passed, this ban could put thousands of local people out of work, cause untold numbers of bankruptcies, harm the local economy, decrease government revenue, and deny access to essential treatment for thousands of local people suffering from disease and sickness.

In addition, if passed 1A would push the Medical Marijuana industry into our neighborhoods. Under 1A, your next door neighbor could legally sell Medical Marijuana without your knowledge, and there would be a greater risk of home invasions, fires, and other hazards. By voting “NO” on 1A, you ensure that the Medical Marijuana industry remains highly regulated, secured, and out of our neighborhoods.
The forum will feature two speakers: Steve Hammers, President of Hammers Construction, who will discuss why the passage of 1A would hurt the local economy and cause local people to lose their jobs; and Lono Ho’ala, a biochemist, author, and Kahuna Priest, who will explain why the passage of 1A would drive the Medical Marijuana business back into our neighborhoods, making our neighborhoods less safe.
Here are the details of the event:

Letters to the Editor - Vote No on 1A

1) By Audrey Hatfield, Colorado Springs

On November 2nd, registered voters will make the decision on whether or not to place a Ban on Medical Marijuana Centers in unincorporated El Paso County . If this ban passes, it will have several negative effects of which I would like to point out.

First, there are between 15 and 20 thousand patients that will no longer have safe access to their medication. Under House Bill 1284, Medical Marijuana centers are under tight regulation and operate in a controlled and safe environment. If you value the Patient- Doctor relationship and the right for patients to continue to receive safe access to medication, a ban simply does not make sense on MANY levels! Our government should not be able to strip away the rights of the patients!

Second, a ban will not only affect the right for safe patient access, but will greatly affect our economy. With the recent recession, the medical marijuana industry has grown and prevented many local people from losing their jobs, including carpenters, electricians, construction workers, engineers, accountants, etc. In addition, previously vacant land now has tenants, causing the value of property to increase, and putting money in the pockets of local land owners. A ban of medical marijuana dispensaries will have a trickle down effect throughout the local economy: hundreds to thousands of people will lose their jobs, current construction projects will be abandoned, and government revenue will decrease.

Third, Voting No on 1A if would insure that medical marijuana businesses would stay highly regulated, secured, and out of our neighborhoods. By banning the centers, the medical marijuana business will be pushed into our neighborhoods. Your next door neighbor could be dealing in medical marijuana without your knowledge. This increases the risk of home invasions, fires, and other hazards. In addition, the black market could once again dominate this business. Our neighborhoods will be safer if the medical marijuana business is kept in highly regulated centers.

As a Patient, I am URGING you to look at the facts and make the right decision based on common sense. Vote NO on 1A! Keep the businesses legitimate and safe for patients, the economy thriving, and our neighborhoods secured!

2) By Robert Wiley, Colorado Springs

1A Dispensary Ban is risky for Neighborhoods

In the years prior to Colorado's Medical Marijuana Amendment 20, any patient unable to grow his own medicine had to purchase blackmarket marijuana from street dealers. Amendment 20 removed the criminal connection and provided protection for the acquisition, possession, manufacture, production, use, sale, distribution, dispensing, and transportation of marijuana for medical use for patients and their caregivers.

The caregiver model worked reasonably well for the first few years but was hampered by the limitation of only five patients per caregiver. El Paso County had only 95 patients in early 2005 and needed only a few caregivers to supply their medicine. Subsequently the court invalidated the patient limit, and dispensaries arrived to provide a wide variety of cannabis medications previously unavailable through the rudimentary caregiver model. Patient numbers increased dramatically; the most recent Health Department registry report indicated El Paso County had 3,961 patients at the end of January and we likely have at least twice that number today.

If a dispensary ban is approved it would push thousands of patients into our neighborhoods to purchase from unlicensed caregivers. So instead of having regulated dispensaries operating in commercial or industrial areas, voters would be forcing the medical marijuana operations into our neighborhoods. Don't let this happen. Keep your community safe.

Please vote NO on 1A to keep our communities from being overrun by unregulated caregivers.
