(MFH Media, Colorado Springs): Move For Hunger announces its first Gold’s Gym Food Drive this April to benefit Care and Share Food Bank. All area residents are asked to donate their unopened, non-perishable food items to distribute to local families in need.
“More than 134,051 people in southern Colorado are living on incomes that put them at risk of hunger every year,” says Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “Your help will directly impact thousands of families. Even the smallest donation goes a long way.”
Beginning April 1st, collection boxes will be conveniently located at the Gold’s Gym on 7655 North Union Boulevard, courtesy of Pikes Peak Moving and Storage Company, which will also deliver the donations to the food bank on May 1st.

Steel City and CSU Pueblo present Chicago, the musical

For the first time, a local Pueblo theatre company will be performing the sardonic, spoof musical, Chicago.
This iconic dance musical features two “merry murderesses” as the lead characters, and chronicles America’s love affair with criminals-turned-celebrities. “It’s a really fun (but somewhat dark) show,” says SCTC Artistic Director Jason Laughrey. “It’s funny because it’s true. Americans get obsessed with these murderers and trials and it’s kind of crazy when you think about it.”
The show follows the story of two murderesses/wanna-be Vaudeville stars, Roxie Hart (played by Bethany Nafziger) and Velma Kelly (played by Michaela Shutts). Both starlets see their “recent sensational activities” (i.e. murders) as stepping stones to the big-time. The production features some classic Broadway numbers such as “All That Jazz” and “Razzle Dazzle.” Originally Chicago was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, and the current production attempts to stay somewhat true to the original vision. “Being a choreographer for a ‘Fosse show’ makes life interesting. You have to walk the line of attempting choreography in his style as well as creating your own dances,” says SCTC Managing Director Andrea Garrett.
“It’s a BIG undertaking,” says Laughrey. “It’s only our second year working with the CSU-P Music Department, and there are so many dance numbers. Some of our cast has never even performed in a musical before! I have to say they have happily surprised me. They are working so hard to make this show fantastic.”
“I’m really happy we’re doing this show,” says Garrett. “When I came on with SCTC three years ago, I said we would be doing Chicago, and here we are. No one in Pueblo has attempted anything like this one.”

Colorado Lawmakers Present Tribute to Local Gold Medal Bobsled Team
Sen. Keith King, R-Colorado Springs, and Rep. Marsha Looper, R-Calhan, want to extend their congratulations to the four man bobsled gold medal winners of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, specifically team member Steven Holcomb, who is a local hero.
Bobsled team member Steven Holcomb lives in King and Looper’s district. “Holcomb has become a local hero, and it is an honor to have such a hard working, dedicated athlete in our midst,” King said.
Holcomb, his coach Brian Shimer and Execute Director of the US Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Darrin Steele will be in Gov. Bill Ritter’s office at 9:15 a.m. March 22 to receive a proclamation from the Governor.
After the governor's proclamation, the three will make appearances on the House and Senate floors for tributes and a video of gold medal event.
“I am so excited to honor the bobsled crew for their hard work, strength and speed,” said Looper. “It has been 62 years since an American men’s four-man bobsled team could claim an Olympic gold medal. This is a tremendous accomplishment.”
The USA-1 four-man bobsleigh team piloted by Holcomb and his crew members Curt Tomasevicz, Steve Mesler and Justin Olsen won the four-heat race by a combined time of 3:24.46 and won the gold by .38 seconds.

The Incumbent (employed) Workers program provides grants for training so that companies can help their employees learn new skills or upgrade existing skills to ensure business competitiveness in the global economy.
Grant funds are currently available to train full-time, permanent, non-contractual workers who earn at least $12 per hour.
Companies demonstrating that training may help avoid future layoffs will be given priority for the grants. Grant funds are limited to $30,000 per company. The training funds will be awarded through a competitive process. Applications can be found online at www.ppwfc.org and must be submitted by April 9, 2010.

The Energizer Bunny Hot “Hare” Balloon will be attending only three festivals this year. They have already announced one festival is in Missouri.

BBB Foundation Holds Reel Teen Video Contest
It’s never too early to learn how to evaluate businesses and make smart purchasing decisions so your BBB Foundation is hosting a fun, educational video production contest for teens living in southern Colorado . The project has been created to help these young consumers discover, and then ultimately use, the services provided by the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado.
Videos must be one to three minutes in length and will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
* Originality
* Creativity
* Appeal to a teen audience
* Adherence to the BBB brand
* Understanding of how the BBB can help teens make wise buying decisions.
First prize is $500 and second prize of $250.
Entrants must live in one of the following counties served by the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado: Alamosa, Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Cheyenne , Conejos, Costilla, Crowley , Custer, El Paso , Fremont , Gunnison, Hinsdale, Huerfano, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Las Animas, Lincoln , Mineral, Otero, Prowers, Pueblo , Rio Grande , Saguache and Teller.

The Colorado Springs Conservatory The Ballet Society of Colorado Springs & Ormao Dance Company Present “Beautiful Chaos”

A performance dedicated to original student compositions and student choreography
Three of the city’s finest after school arts programs create a forum for student expression that makes for a totally creative performance. 2010 marks the third year of this unique collaboration that brings the students from the Colorado Springs Conservatory, the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs and the Ormao Dance Company together. Students from the Conservatory compose short musical selections that are then choreographed and performed by students from both dance schools. The musical genre ranges from rock and roll, minimalist string quartets to digital fusion. The choreography is a blend of classical ballet to dynamic contemporary dance. GOVERNOR’S SUMMER JOB HUNT KICKS OFF WITH YOUTH CAREER FAIR ON MARCH 11
Colorado Springs, CO – It’s that time of year again… time for the Governor’s Summer Job Hunt! The Governor’s Summer Job Hunt connects youth, ages 16 through 21, with local businesses to help them find short-term, summer employment.
In El Paso and Teller Counties, the Summer Job Hunt will start with a youth career fair on Thursday, March 11, 2010 hosted by the Youth Zone at the Pikes Peak Workforce Center. There is no charge to attend but pre-registration is recommended. Youth must be at least 16 years old to participate.
Due to current economic conditions, youth will be encouraged to seek volunteer opportunities to gain experience and build their resumes for future job openings. The Career Fair will also host local vocational schools and colleges so that youth can learn about possible career paths.
WHO: Youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who are looking for full-time or part-time employment or volunteer opportunities.
WHAT: Youth Career Fair for young adults, 16 through 21 years old. Workshops to help youth write a résumé and prepare for interviewing and job searching will be presented during March (more information follows).
